The Ultimate Checklist for Preparing Your Home for a Newborn
A softer, more supportive approach to nesting.
Bringing home a new baby is a moment filled with anticipation, joy — and yes, a bit of uncertainty. While the instinct to “get everything ready” can be strong, preparing your space doesn’t have to mean chaos or clutter.
At The Pregnancy Bar, we believe in making space for what truly matters: comfort, connection, and ease. This checklist is less about buying more, and more about creating a home that supports your healing, your baby’s needs, and your peace of mind.
For You, First
So much of the focus goes to the baby — but the person giving birth matters just as much. Here’s what we recommend having on hand to support your body and mind in the early weeks:
Postpartum recovery basket: Think pads, cooling witch hazel pads, perineal spray, nipple balm, and mesh or high-waisted cotton underwear
Water bottle you actually like using — hydration is essential for healing and milk production
Snacks that don’t require two hands (protein bars, trail mix, nourishing broths)
A comfortable chair or nest: Somewhere soft and supportive for feedings and naps
Soft lighting: A dimmable lamp or salt lamp is perfect for middle-of-the-night feeds
Support system list: Keep numbers of your doula, lactation consultant, and postpartum therapist nearby — just in case
Tip: Don’t forget to prep your calendar too. Lighten your commitments. Give yourself permission to pause.
For Baby’s Arrival
You don’t need everything the internet suggests — promise. Focus on what brings comfort and ease in those first few weeks.
Newborn-sized diapers (and a plan for more once you know what brand fits best)
Wipes or warm washcloths for gentle cleaning
A safe sleep space — bassinet or crib with a firm, flat mattress
Swaddles or sleep sacks — choose breathable, soft fabrics
A handful of soft onesies, footies, and baby caps
A car seat — and ideally, install it well before your due date
A simple way to track feeds and diapers (app, whiteboard, or notebook)
Optional (But Often Helpful)
Everyone’s home — and every baby — is different. Here are a few things you may want but don’t need right away:
White noise machine
Baby wrap or carrier
Nursing pillow
Bottle warmer or sterilizer (if bottle-feeding)
Diaper caddy to move around the house
A basket for baby laundry (because it multiplies)
Keep in mind: There’s nothing magical about being “ready.” You’ll learn together. Trust that.
A Note About Creating a Restful Space
This is something we talk about often in our space at The Pregnancy Bar — how the environment we recover in shapes how we feel. If you can, take a little time to create one calm corner that’s just for you. Cozy blanket, warm tea, maybe a book you don’t need to finish. Make it a ritual — a reminder that you matter too.
